October 6, 2018 – March 15, 2019
Opening Reception October 6 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The exhibition 'Ann Walsh: Colors' opens on Saturday October 6th, 2018 at the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (The SAGG) at Golden Artist Colors, Inc.

This survey of abstract paintings and sculptures by artist Ann Walsh underscores her commitment to the expressive possibilities of color and her investigations of the use of new materials for making art. Walsh has lived in New York City and maintained a studio there since 1980. An illustrated catalog with an essay by artist and critic Franklin Einspruch entitled, "Ann Walsh's Mechanics of Color" will be available.

The exhibition begins with several 'reverse paintings' from the 1980s, in which acrylics were painted in layers on a flexible plastic support that enabled the final image to be developed with the top layer having been created first. After drying, Walsh removed the acrylic lamination from the flexible support and adhered it to stretched canvas.

The chronology of the show proceeds with works that become more sculptural. These use a variety of substrates to reinforce the color selections and explore shifts in both the scale of the works and the densities of color.

The most recent paintings were created in 2018 with HVLP spray guns. The sprayed acrylic allows for a literal solidity of color and allows viewers to engage in the immersion of the color explorations of Ann Walsh.

In his essay about Ann Walsh's works in the show, Franklin Einspruch states, '... a Walsh is orienting, emphatically so. In particular it orients the viewer to a surface, with implicit, spinal-cord-level instructions to regard it aesthetically.'
