Folk Icon and Activist Peter Yarrow Visits EOH, Sponsored by WAER FM The Earlville Opera House will host an evening with folk icon and activist Peter Yarrow August 12 at 8 PM, sponsored by WAER FM. Known for his songwriting, sound quality and commitment to excellence, Peter Yarrow, along with Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, made up the popular folk group Peter, Paul & Mary. The trio produced such standard '60s hits as "Blowin' in the Wind," "If I Had a Hammer" and "Puff the Magic Dragon"; much of their music centered around the social issues and concerns of the times, including war, homelessness, the environment, world hunger, apartheid and the Sanctuary Movement. Yarrow's ability to write songs about social concerns has made him an internationally recognized singer and songwriter. Peter, Paul and Mary played their first show at Greenwich Village's Bitter End, and their first album was released by Warner Brothers Records in 1962. In the 1960s, Greenwich Village was a hotbed of issues, particularly civil rights and the Vietnam War, and Yarrow eagerly jumped into the fray of political activity. The group was at the forefront of the folk-protest movement, and they sang songs of social justice at the historic March on Washington, D.C.—led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—as well as the Selma-Montgomery March of 1965. The trio toured together for nearly 10 years, before breaking up in 1970 to pursue individual careers. Yarrow continued to write music, including Mary MacGregor's No. 1 hit, "Torn Between Two Lovers.” Yarrow produced "Light One Candle," written for the peace process in Israel in 1985, and continues to perform and engage in social issues today.
