X-WR-CALDESC:The Earlville Opera House is pleased to host an Artist Talk by
current exhibiting artist Maureen O’Leary on Saturday\, September 30 at 1
pm.\nMaureen is a painter and photographer who makes work about nature\, o
rdinariness\, daydreams and the idiosyncratic way people create their surr
oundings. She will talk about her current exhibit hanging in the West Gall
ery through October 28. Maureen will discuss her work in the context of co
ntemporary figurative painting and how she draws on both biographical and
social inspiration to make her paintings. This event is free and open to t
he public.\nMaureen was educated at Yale University and at the Art Student
s League and the International Center for Photography in New York. She has
recently shown work at Wayfarers Gallery\, Bushwick\, New York\, City Wit
 hout Walls\, Newark\, New Jersey\, and the Power Plant Gallery\, Durham\,
North Carolina. She is a former recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley Fell
owship in painting from the Foundation des Etats-Unis\, Paris\, and a 2015
finalist for the Julia Margaret Cameron award in photography. Maureen is
based in Mount Sinai\, New York and New York City.\nAccording to Maureen\,
“My work examines domesticity as well as ordinary\, unremarkable events.
Sometimes this examination involves observing how we collect objects aroun
d us and what we select to qualify as civilized versus natural – what is r
ugged\, and what is safe. I am also interested in how we see the wild from
close or afar\, and I wish to scrutinize reality for its humor\, awkwardn
ess\, and charm. I examine the way humans divide up their surroundings - l
and and even species - as well as how wild things are constrained\, partic
ularly in contemporary suburban culture. I am particularly interested to o
bserve people engaged in ordinary activities with objects they treasure\,
and to observe the home environment\, including abstractions derived from
it\, and the natural laws behind how we reshape the world to make a home w
ithin it.”\nPlease join us as we celebrate and learn more about the talent
s of this incredible artist. More information about Maureen can be found a
t: www.maureenoleary.com or info@maureenoleary.com. For details about Maur
